- Ashoke-Means "without sorrow" in Sanskrit. This name was borne by Ashoka the Great, a 3rd-century BC emperor of India.
- Ashima-Means "the name, portion, or lot" depending on context. "without boundaries, limitless"
- Nikhil-Means "whole, entire" in Sanskrit.
- Sonali-colors, gold, metals, yellow
- Explanation: In a way Nikhil could be the same meaning as the book because in chapter 3 pages 53-65 his parents change his name from Gogol to Nikhil and Gogol at the time did not know Nikhil. All throughout chapter 5, Gogol starts going by Nikhil and he forgets a part of him which is Gogol. He starts to figure out himself as a whole. Nikhil learns who he was named after, and when he reads the book he questions why he is named after this man. When his father named him Nikhil he wasn't thinking about who the man was personally. Ashoke was was thinking that Nikhil saved his life.
- Ashoke is motivated and wants to remember the past but not dwell on it, meaning without sorrow. He doesn't like talking about what happened to him on the train, and tries to move on.
- Ashima is the only one in to book that really goes into detail about how she feels. The book goes into great detail about how she feels about things. Certain little things mean the most to Ashima, her name meaning suits he well. She will do whatever she thinks that is better for her family.
- Sonali
Next, look up your name and your family member names. What do your names mean, and how do they relate to your personalities? Explain.
- Azaria-Means "YAHWEH has helped" in Hebrew, derived from meaning "help" and referring to the Hebrew God. This is the name of many Old Testament characters including of one of the three men the Babylonian king ordered cast into a fiery furnace. His Babylonian name was Abednego.
- Edward-Means "rich guard" "wealth, fortune"
- Teneille- means "light"Use of the name may be due to a misconception that Tenille was the singer's first name, rather than her surname. The meaning of the surname is not known; it may be an Irish surname meaning "son of Neil"
- Explanation:I feel like my name fits me and is the correct definition of my name because certainly believe that God has help me. My Dad is not a 'rich guard' he does have a lot of money because of his hard work. The meaning Teneille could fit her in certain ways because i see he as the light in my life because she keeps me on the right track.
I agree with your name because your mom (the Babylonian king) basically casts you into the fire every time you get in trouble, like me and my mom lol, crazy mom gang
ReplyDeleteYour explanations of each name dedicated to the novel are excellent. Your take on Ashima's name exemplifies her well. SHe will continue to do whatever she needs to do for her family throughout the novel. Even though Gogol separates himself from his family later on, Ashima tries to bring him back around in order to unite the family again.
ReplyDeleteIt is my pleasure to learn that your name has the connection with Hebrew God. Even though I don't have a religion (people in China usually don't and my parents don't), I like to hear the bible story. I appreciate all religion and appreciate your name. Question: What's your religion? Judaism? or Christianity? I like the way you think that your dad is the light to candle your path in life.
